Dandelion Sunset

by Oregano @ 2007-05-30 - 21:23:46

While dandelions are not much loved by gardeners, I love the way a field can burst out in yellow when the dandelions come into flower together. I noticed that a few weeks ago at home then last week in Finland.

When we were in Germany we were out for an early evening walk with the sun getting low in the sky. The field we were in was full of dandelion clocks and my wife suddenly pointed out how the setting sun was picking out the dandelion clocks. I had a long lens with me and took the following photo.

 dandelion

And finally... a bit of trivia. I did not realise until a year ago that "dandelion" is a corruption of dent de lion (lion's tooth) in French; the meaning being obscure. The german word is Löwenzahn which means the same. In contrast "daisy" apparently comes from "day's eye" due to it opening up during the day.

Actually I have you to thank for making the posting. I had uploaded the photo back in March but had not written the text to go with it.

I saw your posting http://kikita.blog.co.uk/2007/05/29/ode_to_rhe_dandalions~2357725 and that reminded me that I had not shared the photo.

Thanks

That`s a beautiful pic - again!!! Thank you for sharing all these!

It took me a long time to realise that Dandelion and Loewenzahn are the same flower. While the British associate it with tea, we eat it as salad but even more likely take pleasure in blowing the seeds in each others` faces...

Well Bellydancer,

I think that blowing the seeds is an international habit. When I was small we were told about the "dandelion clock" the hour being the number of blows you need to disperse the seeds.

We have given dandelion leaves to our guinea pig but I know they can be used in salads. Are they used raw or blanched?

The Dandelion did indeed get its name as a corruption of the French for Lion's Tooth, as its leaves' shape is reminiscent of that of a lion's tooth. I've had that bit of trivia stored in my head since childhood. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to share that! And thanks for adding the trivia about daisies. I honestly never new that. It will be stored for future reference in pub quizzes:D
