Bluebell Time

by Oregano @ 2007-04-30 - 08:37:21

Although I have been familiar with bluebells in woods since my childhood, it is still a sight I try to see every year. Bluebells are only wild in western Europe and I think restricted to UK, France and Spain (though the Spanish variety is different).

I find that the beauty of a woodland carpeted with bluebells is very hard to convey in photos. In the foreground you see individual flowers and in the background the flowers combine to form a "haze".

This Saturday we got up early to see them at about 07:00. They have flowered a few weeks earlier this year. I often think of them being at their best around May Day but they were probably at their peak a week ago.

In many bluebell woods there are also patches of wild garlic. They usually flower at the same time too. This Saturday was no exception and there were whole banks covered with white blooms.

Dear oragano,

I must confess in my busy life as a chef and part-time blogger and dad and food writer....I dont make the effort enough to go around and visit the blogs of my friends....and yet when I do...I am always amazed at the skill of the photography and the writing.

You have some wonderful photos each one I could spend time praising.

I too am lucky enough to have a small stream just 200 yards from my house which has a magical swath of wild garlic and bluebells at this time of the year.

Regards
Kevin

Many thanks for your kind comments. If people enjoy the photos it makes them worth publishing... and I will do more.

Sounds like you live in a lovely location. I think it is great to be able to experience the woodlands at this time of the year.

BTW, I always knew wild garlic as a child just from a lane near my home...yet I never found anybody cooking with it until I went to Germany. There many people use it 'in season'. I am curious to know if you use it in your restaurant.

Thanks again for your feedback.
